I purchased this heater a while ago as a low cost solution to heating a 2 1/2 car detached garage (my woodworking shop) so I could work on projects all winter long. I have never used this heater in my house, but I can attest that it has always done an excellent job of keeping my workshop warm. The kerosene fuel is readily and cheaply available and I have only had to change the mantle once so far. I usually light this thing up and go back in the house for maybe a half hour. When I return, the garage is warm enough that I can get by with jeans and a flannel shirt, even on the coldest winter days. By the way, I insulated the walls and ceiling of my garage, but the double garage door is uninsulated steel. One thing to remember is that this heater has an open flame, so be very careful around solvents and flammable finishes! Also, if you are worried about odor - there is definitely a distinct smell created by this heater. I would not put one in my house... We bought this heater to use during power outages and it's saved us during more than one ice storm, plus we run it frequently during extra cold spells to give our lousy heat pump a rest. Heats the whole house very quickly and is safe to use. I bought this heater to heat an uninsulated 700 sq. ft. cabin. It is supposed to heat 1000 sq. ft. but this heater wouldn't even put out any heat more than 6 inches away from it. If you stood directly over it, there was some heat but I am unable to sleep that way. We had 2 Coleman propane lamps - the ones with the mantles - and I swear they put out more heat than this heater. I returned it and I do not recommend it. |
